My Brother

Even before living memory
my brother stood beside the river
crowned in a headdress of jade.

Tall and stately he stands
with head slightly abow to the Creator

He gazes amusingly
at his reflecton in the sky below.

Stately Oak and noble River
brothers through the ages.

Locked in an unending battle
for the shore
a battle I have witnessed since childhood.

Year after year my brother awaits
for our shadows to cross.

And we again meet
he dances with the wind.

A dance only I can see.
